At Anniston Academy, we believe learning should be hands-on, meaningful, and connected to the real world. This month, our students had the incredible opportunity to learn from a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) during our Community Helper Day — and it was an experience they won’t soon forget.
Meet Our Community Helpers: Mr. Jacob & Mrs. Sarah
Mr. Jacob, a CRNA, visited our school to teach students about anesthesia, airway safety, and the important role anesthesia providers play in hospitals and surgical settings. He was joined by his wife, Mrs. Sarah, who helped guide students through interactive stations and supported hands-on demonstrations.
Together, they created an engaging, age-appropriate learning experience that allowed our students to explore medical tools in a safe and exciting way.
What Students Learned About Anesthesia
Mr. Jacob explained how anesthesia helps patients stay comfortable and safe during medical procedures. He shared:
How anesthesiologists and CRNAs monitor breathing and vital signs
The importance of oxygen and airway management
How medical teams work together during surgery
What safety equipment is used in operating rooms
Students were fascinated to learn how carefully anesthesia is managed and how much science and precision goes into keeping patients safe.
Hands-On Learning: Stethoscopes, Suction & Phlebotomy Kits
One of the highlights of the day was the hands-on exploration. Students were able to:
Practice listening to heartbeats with stethoscopes
Learn how suction devices help keep airways clear
Explore a phlebotomy kit and understand how blood draws are performed
Ask questions about hospitals, surgeries, and medical careers
For many of our students, especially those who may have medical experiences of their own, this was empowering. Instead of feeling intimidated by medical tools, they were able to see how they work and why they are used.
Why Community Helper Days Matter
At Anniston Academy, we prioritize experiential learning. Events like Community Helper Day:
Expand students’ understanding of career pathways
Reduce fear around medical environments
Encourage curiosity about science and healthcare
Build confidence through hands-on engagement
For neurodivergent learners, real-world demonstrations can be especially powerful. Seeing, touching, and exploring tools in a supportive environment helps build understanding in ways textbooks simply cannot.
Inspiring Future Healthcare Heroes
We are so grateful to Mr. Jacob and Mrs. Sarah for sharing their time, knowledge, and passion with our students. Experiences like this plant seeds — and you never know which student might grow up to become the next CRNA, nurse, physician, or medical innovator.
At Anniston Academy, we don’t just teach academics. We build connections between learning and life.
Thank you to our community helpers for helping our students see what’s possible. 💙
