Regulation Comes Before Learning Every Time

At Anniston Academy, we do not start with compliance.
We start with regulation.
Because a child who is overwhelmed, dysregulated, or shut down is not refusing to learn. They are unable to access learning.
What Does Regulation Actually Mean?
Regulation is the ability to feel safe enough in your body to engage with the world. It is not about being quiet. It is not about sitting still. It is not about looking like you are paying attention. It is about feeling grounded, feeling safe, feeling supported.
Only then can learning happen.
The Brain Science Behind It
When a child is stressed, their brain shifts into survival mode. In that state, problem solving decreases, language becomes harder to access, flexibility drops, emotions feel bigger and harder to manage So when we push academics before regulation, we are asking the brain to do something it literally cannot do in that moment. But when we regulate first, everything changes.
What It Looks Like in Practice
At Anniston Academy, regulation is not something students have to earn.
It is something we provide.
That might look like movement before sitting, deep pressure or sensory input throughout the day, flexible seating and environments, breaks without punishment or shame, and co-regulation with a trusted adult. We do not remove support when a child is struggling. We increase it.
Support Should Increase Autonomy Not Compliance
Our goal is not to control behavior. Our goal is to build skills. When we prioritize regulation, we see more engagement, more communication, more independence, and more confidence because students are not spending their energy trying to survive the environment. They are finally able to participate in it.
First Regulate Then Educate
This is not just a phrase.
It is a shift in mindset.
It means we stop asking, "How do we get this child to comply?"
And start asking "What does this child need to feel safe enough to learn?"
Because education is not just about information.
It is about access.
Wear the Message
We created our First regulate then educate shirt as a reminder of what actually works. Not just in schools, but in homes, in therapy spaces, and in everyday interactions with children. It is a statement that says connection comes first, support comes first, regulation comes first, and learning follows.

Final Thought
If a child cannot regulate, they cannot learn.
And if we truly want better outcomes, we have to start there.
Every time.
